This technique of painting was a new discovery for me (in 2021). I was recovering from knee surgery and had not been able to get away from my bed for a few weeks. The raging urge to paint was constant and I struggled to find a position to paint effectively in.
I decided to start something new and paint according to my physical restrictions while adventuring through a study on methods of mark-making with paint. I sat on my bed attached a foam roller to a broom pole, and smeared, threw, and dragged paint across the canvas. I found some plastic bags, and rulers that I used to push and pull paint, and later I used brushes and paper cups to create layers of shape, texture, form, and hue..
This was a total experiment based on my physical restrictions, but the lessons I learned in the process gave me an understanding of a technique that I have used in almost every painting since. This free, and emotional expression was a turning point in my painting career, this is where I began to allow myself to be loose, playful, and expressive without overwhelming intentionality. It has become a staple in my practice
