What Drives the Work
My name is Joshua Strydom. I'm a Zimbabwean artist based in Portugal, and everything I make begins with a question I don't plan on answering.
My practice moves between original paintings and limited edition fine art prints, each being a record of a specific moment of looking, thinking, or feeling my way through the world. I tend to work slowly, deliberately, with a deep belief that an artwork made with genuine attention carries something that can't be reproduced on demand.
The Practice
For me, making art is an act of translation. I'm interested in what lies between cultures, languages, and places... The tension and tenderness of belonging somewhere and also not quite having a rooted sense of place.
That thread runs through everything: the imagery I return to, the palette I reach for, the stories I choose to tell. My work is personal without being biographical, and centred on our shared human experience. I want each piece to feel like something you've maybe seen before but somehow can never go to, because it only truly exists within my work.
Exhibitions
Most recently, in June 2026, I presented "(I'm)migration" at Loft Marvilla in Lisbon, an exhibition exploring movement, identity, and the negotiations we make between where we come from and where we arrive. The work drew on years of living between countries and the particular kind of clarity that displacement can bring.
Showing that body of work confirmed what I already suspected: that the most honest art is made at the edges, in the in-between spaces, where nothing is settled, and everything is still possible.
So far, I have exhibited my art in over 15 countries, and I have made art in around 30 countries. My work is included in museums, gallery collections, and private collections on every continent except Antarctica (but I am open to commissions).
Prints & Originals
I offer original paintings, cyanotypes, lamps, tables, murals, installations, and occasionally I release museum-quality fine art prints, each edition small enough to remain meaningful, each piece chosen because it holds up over time.
I work as a cultural organiser wherever I go, curating exhibitions, facilitating workshops, symposiums, and creative events. I find great satisfaction in bringing culture to a wider audience and helping other artists integrate into meaningful partnerships.
