Ukuthandwa is a Xhosa/Zulu word meaning (to be loved) and this painting is part of my ongoing conversation with belonging.
I grew up in Zimbabwe, then spent years moving between countries and languages. Over time I started noticing how the idea of “home” keeps shifting. Sometimes it is landscape. Sometimes it is people. Sometimes it is a feeling you do not have words for yet.
In this image, the cow holds a calm, direct gaze while the surrounding flora becomes oversized, almost theatrical. The world is familiar and slightly unreal at the same time. That tension is where I like to work: between what I remember, what I can name, and what I am still learning to trust.
It is a celebration of the power of domesticity to calm the mind and heal the heart.
