Rufu - Digital Collage - Museum-Quality Matte Paper Poster

While living in Memphis I created this image, titled “Rufu”. According to vashona.com the meaning of the Shona word “Rufu” in English is “the cessation of all vital phenomena without the capacity of resurrection.” This is made up of a collection of hundreds of photographs of tombstones from the Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis Tennessee. Many of them were taken with my Oupas Canon AE-1 35mm camera. 

At the time I created this image, I was in a year-long study into the philosophy of death. Who does death happen to? When does death happen? And who actually even experiences death?

From the day we are born we move closer to the day we will die. The reality of this statement is handled differently by cultures around the world, and the response we have to it dictates how we will live a large portion of our daily lives, forever.
