I am proud to share that I am once again participating in the Picabella Summer Exhibition, now in its 2025 edition. This is my second time being part of this special event, which takes place in the extraordinary rose gardens of @picabellarose in Harare.
The exhibition is hosted by @juanitastrydom1 and curated by @traceafrica1986, whose thoughtful curatorial vision makes this showcase a true highlight of the season.
For this year’s exhibition, I am presenting a collection of three new cyanotypes. Each piece is created through a layered double exposure process: first exposed in the sun, then bleached to alter the pH balance and shift the tones, and finally exposed again in the deep, rich Prussian blue typical of cyanotype. This process gives the works both subtle complexity and bold contrast.
The imagery began with a painting I made of a vulture photographed in Zimbabwe. From that painting, I developed patterns inspired by Zimbabwean textiles, blending memory, place, and tradition into a unified visual language. These works continue my ongoing exploration of migration, belonging, and place.
What makes them especially meaningful is that they were created under the Lisbon sun and now return to be exhibited under the Zimbabwean sun, bridging two homes, two landscapes, and two rhythms of life.
Even more importantly, I have committed that 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these three cyanotypes will be donated to the Harare Children’s Home. This decision reflects my belief that art can not only express but also give back, directly supporting the community where my roots lie. The Picabella Summer Exhibition is more than an art show, it is a celebration of growth, transformation, and connection, set in one of the most beautiful gardens in Zimbabwe. I am honoured to contribute my work to such a vibrant and meaningful context.
If you are in Harare this season, I invite you to visit the Picabella Summer Exhibition and experience this unique combination of art and nature. By supporting the exhibition, you are also helping the Harare Children’s Home through the sale of all the art that is being exhibited.
Your presence makes a difference.
Much love,
Josh
