Joshua Strydom: Artist, Art Dealer & Cultural Curator

The past months have been full of exciting developments in my work as an artist, art dealer, and cultural curator. Alongside my own practice, I continue to collaborate with galerie gugging, where I focus on online sales, collector relations, and social media. Working with the gallery has given me the privilege of being part of a story much larger than myself: the international recognition of Art Brut and self-taught artists.

At the heart of this story is Nina Katschnig, the long-standing director and curator of galerie gugging. Her vision has been instrumental in transforming the narrative of Art Brut from something once seen as “outsider” into a celebrated and vital force in contemporary culture. I am honoured to contribute to this mission and to learn from her leadership, which continues to bring the Gugging Artists and their international colleagues into new collections and conversations worldwide.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of representing galerie gugging at viennacontemporary 2025, Austria’s leading international art fair. Our booth, titled NATURE – blue & green, showcased the work of Marko Djurdjevic and Leopold Strobl, and it was inspiring to see how audiences connected with the emotional power and unique visual languages of these two self-taught artists.

Back at the gallery, our exhibition radical clarity – günther schützenhöfer is in its final days. This show has drawn attention for its striking minimalism, playful clarity, and the artist’s distinctive exploration of form. If you haven’t yet visited, this is your last chance to experience it in person. Next, we are excited to present a new exhibition with Jürgen Maurer, promising a fresh dialogue that will further expand our understanding of Art Brut in relation to contemporary art.

On a personal note, I have also been developing a new project that brings my own paintings into everyday life: a collection of t-shirts featuring my artwork. These designs allow people to carry a piece of my art with them, blending fine art and wearable culture. It’s a project that reflects my belief that art should not only live on gallery walls but also in our daily experiences.

I remain deeply grateful for everyone who supports my work, whether through following my exhibitions, engaging with me as a cultural curator, or wearing one of my new shirts.

The journey of exploring creativity, belonging, and place continues to unfold, and I look forward to sharing the next chapter with you.
