Jan Hus was a warrior for the cause of religious freedom. In the Bohemian Region he begun preaching in the local languages of Czech and German, at the time the church only preached in Latin. Only the nobility could understand Latin. Hus’s message was that salvation was free, opposed to the church’s selling of indulgences (payment to gain forgiveness of sin, and guarantee a spot in heaven). Hus was then burned at the stake as a heretic; and his followers became know as the Hussites, who started the 15 year long the Hussite Wars. This ended with the first defenestration of Prague, 13 Catholic leaders being thrown out the window at the top of the tower at Charles Square in Prague- followed by King Wenceslaus IV death and the 2oo-ish years of religious peace and toleration. Today (July 6) is Jan Hus Day in the Czech Republic, in celebration of the religious freedoms we enjoy in the Nation.
